2005 Redskins MVP
Clinton Portis is one wacky guy. He dresses up at his weekly press conferences, and cracks some odd jokes in post game interviews. He’s told Coach Gibbs what plays to run and asked him if he wants to win. He’s been known to go to walk-throughs in his wacky attire. To put it nicely the guy is very unique. He’s also one hell of a football player and The Redskin Report’s 2005-06 team MVP.
Although Mark Brunell was chosen as the midseason most valuable player, by season’s end there was only two candidates left to choose from. While Santana Moss had a remarkable year, and helped turn the offense around, it was Portis who elevated his game down the stretch and led the Redskins to the playoffs for the 1st time since 1999.
Over the final five games of the season, Portis accumulated 537 yards and six touchdowns. The Redskins won all five of those games and clinched a playoff berth on the season’s last day. In that final game, Portis broke off a 22 yard touchdown run to give the Redskins a lead they would never relinquish. When the games meant the most, Portis took the team on his back and lead the way.
For the season Portis finished with a Redskin team record 1516 yards. He had nine 100 yard games and scored 11 touchdowns. While he isn’t a huge receiving threat, Portis added 30 catches for 216 yards in 2005.
But the story of Portis’ worth to the Redskins can’t be fully told by his great numbers. Portis is a lethal blocker. His blitz pick up skills are tremendous and unlike most running backs, when left into to block, he punishes would be tacklers. If a reception is made down field, you often see Portis darting besides the receiver looking for someone to hit. This willingness to hit and help teammates energizes Redskin players and helps elevate everyone’s game.
Off the field Portis keeps the team loose. The ‘Return of Southeast Jerome’ press conference won’t soon be forgotten, as Portis got many of his teammates into his wacky act. His humor may be a bit off the wall, but it can’t be denied that he is well loved by coaches and teammates alike.
With the appointment of Al Saunders as the new offensive coordinator, many feel Portis’ best Redskins days are ahead. If Portis can improve from the best ever season by a Redskin running back, the sky is the limit for this team. But even if Portis has peaked, this season will be one to remember. Portis was the leader and best player on the team that returned the Redskins to respectability.
