Random Thoughts - Redskins and the NFL

This entire offseason thing needs to get a move on. I’m about ready for a draft or some free agents signings or just for anything to happen. The Post hasn’t wrote a single article on the Skins since February 4th, so we’ve gone about 2 weeks with no Skins news. I don’t think I have to tell you that this sucks. It is especially painful when you’re trying to come up with something interesting to write about. So what do writers do when there have no good ideas for a column? A random thoughts piece:

  • Rock Cartwright is going to get the most attention out of all the Redskins’ unrestricted free agents. Ryan Clark and Robert Royal may start for the Redskins, but Cartwright’s special teams ability combined with his potential as a running back makes him the most appealing.
  • The Skins will go hard after David Givens but he’ll end up being over paid by someone else (Eagles?) and the Skins will end up with signing someone like Brian Finneran or Kevin Johnson.
  • Clinton Portis will lead the NFC in rushing next year. Alexander and Barber will both decline a bit while Portis will have his best year as a Skin.
  • Have you ever noticed that most fans and media only see similarities between players of the same race? When Al Saunders came aboard, people started talking about the similarities between Patrick Ramsey and Trent Green. If those people were to take off those blinders, they’d see that Jason Campbell is actually a much closer match to Green.
  • Cory Raymer’s performance at guard in the playoffs may have been the most pathetic display ever put on by an established NFL player. Raymer has some value, but its ONLY at center.
  • Eli Manning true skill level is closer to his dreadful 2nd half than the decent 1st half. You can’t be a successful NFL quarterback if you only complete 53% of your passes.
  • Lemar Marshall in 2005 was better than Antonio Pierce in 2004. The only advantage I’d give Pierce is that appears to be a better leader than Marshall. Of course I’m only judging this on the fact that Pierce used to smack the lineman in the ass to move them around while Marshall kept his hands to himself.
  • As a Redskin fan I love the current Dallas offensive players. All of their skill players aren’t good enough to take them to the playoffs, but not bad enough to be replaced.
  • I’ve finally figured out what Peter King’s reasoning for not voting for Art Monk in the Hall of Fame voting. King is the exact opposite of Monk. He’s terrible at what he does, but because he’s on every radio and TV show known to man, people start to think he actually knows what he’s talking about.
  • If Kurt Warner is worth 3 years and 18 million dollars to Arizona in this quarterback depleted market, what will a team like Detroit or Miami give up for Ramsey?
  • Maybe the reason why the Eagles didn’t spend money for all those years is because they have no idea who to spend it on. Terrell Owens is one obvious bust but don’t forget their other big money signings. They signed Kearse for approximately 74 billion dollars a few years back and now they are looking for someone who can actually get pressure on a quarterback. On the even worse side they let go two good to great defensive lineman in Simon and Burgess for nothing. And can someone explain to me why Bryan Westbrook is worth big money when you can get 98% of his productions from Ryan Moats

In closing, a question: What would you consider to be a successful season for the Redskins next year?

  • Pete Prisco posted an article basically saying the skins are going to have to cut multiple starters to get under the cap. Apparently the Skins are in the worst cap situation of all-time, somehow worse than the Broncos, who are 30 mil over the cap right now. The errors in his reporting are astounding — just two or three weeks ago the Post had a detailed article saying how relatively simple it would be for the skins to get under the cap.

  • The Redskins have a ton of roster bonuses that come up this offseason. These all can be converted to signing bonuses and then the cap hit can be spread throughout the length of the contract. They save about 15 million that way. Check this article out to see how easily the Skins can get under the cap: http://redskins.scout.com/2/490049.html

  • To answer the question, they have to win the division next year, they have to get playoff games at home, and they have to get to the NFC Championship game (if it’s at home, they have to win it). That would be progress.

As for available WRs, I read that Brandon Lloyd of the 49ers is a restricted FA. I’m sure it would cost too much (in money and draft picks?) to get him, but I thought it is at least an interesting possibility.

Am I the only one who thinks the Skins are going to try to trade up to the first round (Ramsey and a mid-rounder?) to pick a DE? Watching college football this past season, I was struck by how many top-shelf DEs are out there, and I’ve been hoping that some would slip to the 2nd round, but it looks like that ain’t happening. Daniels brought us a nice pass rush in the stretch run, but he was completely silent before that. The Skins can’t afford to be content with the overall pass rush from the line.
