DVD Review - Washington Redskins: Super Bowl Champions

Everyone loves NFL Films. They combine great camera work, behind the scenes access and of course the unforgettable voice guy to deliver a great product. So when they came out with a DVD chronicling the Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins teams, it was a must buy.

Technical Details:

2 Disks
196 minutes
Shown on a 4:3 ratio, no widescreen option
Dolby Surround Stereo

Disk 1:

The first thing you notice is that this is the actual NFL Films recap of the season produced in 1982. There isn’t an updated content on these DVDs. Although a recent interview with some of the players would have been a nice feature to add to the DVD, at least you know you are getting the true story of the season and not some version based on who became big names later on in their career.

The 1st half of the 1982 set focuses on the regular season of the NFL. Note that this portion isn’t Redskins centered at all. It covers the entire NFL, so if you are looking for in-depth coverage of a week two Redskins game, you’ll be disappointed. Highlights include some talk of the Air Coryall offense in San Diego, the NFL strike, Kenny Anderson breaking Sammy Baugh’s completion percentage record, Miami’s “Killer B’s”, the struggles of the 49ers and James Lofton leading the Packers to the playoffs. The Smurfs, Hogs, Theismann and Mark Mosely are featured in the Redskins section of the video. There is also in-depth coverage of the Conference Championship games, which of course includes the famous Washington-Dallas battle.

The 2nd half is all about Super Bowl XVII: Miami vs. Washington. In typical NFL Films fashion, you get to go behind the scenes and they go in-depth on certain plays. The main aspects of the game featured are: Two long Miami TDs (KO return and a long pass), a big turnover on a Manley sack, Theismann breaking up a sure interception, Charlie Brown’s touchdown and of course the Riggins run.

Disk 2:

The second disk covers both the 1987 season and 1991 season. I won’t go into as many details on what you’ll see, but it is the same setup as the 1982 feature. Each season begins with a look at the season and then goes in depth into the Super Bowl games. The 1987 season also features a gloriously cheesy 80s tune to set the tone, while 1991 has a bit too much MC Hammer for anyone’s liking. The 1987 portion also has a look at the replacement players who have some interesting stories.

Special Features:

These are shorter NFL Films features. There are four included in set:

1) The Fun Bunch
2) John Riggins
3) Doug Williams
4) Joe Gibbs

The long time Redskin fan won’t learn anything new, but these are fun looks at the past. The Gibbs feature is especially good, as Gibbs talk about how much he likes to have players who have big personalities like Riggins among others.

Bottom Line:

This is a fun little DVD set on the past of the Redskins. The older fan will enjoy the trip down memory lane, while the younger fan gets the chance to learn a bit about the history of his favorite team. Please note that these aren’t the most in-depth disks and there is no updated content looking at each team in retrospect. However for less than $20 at Amazon, you can’t go wrong.
