NFL Picks: Week One

JOIN THE FREE PICK’EM CONTEST, WIN A JERSEY!!! Last day for entries.

Its finally that time again, the NFL is back baby. I’d insert the generic opening about how all teams are optimistic, and you never know which team will surprise but I assume you’ve read that about 50 times already this week, so onto the picks:

All lines are taken from Mansion.com. For those who don’t follow the spreads, a spread of + something means the visitor is favored and obviously a – something spread means the home team is favored.

Miami at Pittsburgh (+1)
Big Ben is out after an emergency appendectomy, leaving my chances of winning $1000 resting on the shoulders of the immortal Charlie Batch. This will be a war but I can’t get the image of Dante Culpepper throwing interception after interception last year out of my head. And like I’m not going to take the team that can win be some cash.
Pittsburgh 21 Miami 17

Denver at St. Louis (+3.5)
The Sports Guy picked St.Louis as his sleeper team. He’s officially lost his mind.
Denver 31 St.Louis 14

NY Jets at Tennessee (-3)

A couple of years ago this would have been an interesting game. Now we have one team who’s yet to decide who they are starting at QB and another team who’s using a guy who’s arm was weak before he blew out his shoulder twice.
Tennessee 20 NY Jets 16

Buffalo at New England (-8.5)
New England is going to have trouble making the playoffs this year, luckily for them, Buffalo’s going to have trouble winning 5 games this year.
New England 28 Buffalo 17

Baltimore at Tampa Bay (-3)
Why on earth are people picking Baltimore to make the playoffs this year? McNair may be an improvement on Boller, but it’ll be an upset if he lasts more than five games before getting hurt.
Tampa Bay 20 Baltimore 10

Cincinnati at Kansas City (-2.5)

Shootout alert. Larry Johnson could run wild here, but I’m thinking Cincy will build a nice lead and force KC to the air. This, my friends, is your LOCK OF THE WEEK.
Cincinnati 41 Kansas City 28

Seattle at Detroit (+6)

Ah good ole Detroit. They’ve actually been gaining momentum in some circles as a team to watch. Those circles are wrong. Seattle should handle them easily.
Seattle 31 Detroit 14

Atlanta at Carolina (-4.5)
Atlanta is a pretty intriguing team this year. I don’t care much for Mr. Mexico as a QB, but they have a strong defense and a good running game. Carolina is getting a bit too much love as a top team of late. Let’s take the upset.
Atlanta 21 Carolina 20

Philadelphia at Houston (+4.5)
Houston signed Ron Dayne to fill out their running back position recently. Call me crazy, but someone really screwed up here when they didn’t take Reggie Bush.
Philly 27 Houston 17

New Orleans at Cleveland (-3)
Speaking of Reggie Bush, the Saints head to Cleveland to open the season. I heard an interview with Romeo Crennel where he was talking about how they can’t overlook the Saints and just chalk them up as an easy win. He knows he’s coaching the Browns right?
Cleveland 21 New Orleans 17

Dallas at Jacksonville (-2.5)
Jacksonville is getting overlooked by some, but they are still a good team and one of the most physical in the NFL. If they can keep Byron Leftwich healthy, they have a chance to do some damage this year.
Jacksonville 17 Dallas 13

Chicago at Green Bay (+3.5)
It was a sad day to see the Packers cut 50-50 Rod Gardner this week. Ok, it wasn’t that sad. How many picks does Brett Favre does this year? Kudos to the Bears for giving their running back job to the best runner and not the highest draft pick.
Chicago 24 Green Bay 20

San Francisco at Arizona (-7.5)
Ummm, did you know that the stadium in Arizona has a retractable field. And its not named the Pink Taco Stadium.
Arizona 31 San Francisco 20

Indianapolis at NY Giants (+3)
This game hinges on the defensive ends of the Giants. If they can get constant pressure on Peyton Manning and not give him time to pick apart their suspect secondary, the Giants have a chance. The Colts usually don’t have much trouble against 4-3 defenses though, and Peyton is a bazillion times better than Eli.
Indy 38 NY Giants 28

Monday September 11, 2006
Minnesota at Washington (-4.5)
A lot more on this game tomorrow.
Washington 24 Minnesota 17

San Diego at Oakland (+3)
I thought Phillip Rivers looked terrible in the brief action he saw last year, but I’d still take him over Aaron Brooks.
San Diego 27 Oakland 14

Lee, no peaking at my tie breaker on the Contest again! That was my final score for the SD-Oakland game.

Although I disagree with the Cinnci-KC game results (though I was the first person last year of anyone I know to start touting the Cinnci as being “For Real”, at week 4.

Oh, and I can’t bet against Carolina at home against the Falcons… not this early in the season.

I agree Washington will win, but I’m not sure they’ll cover that spread… not the way Hall has kicked in the Preseason. I’d love to be wrong on that, though (*the SPREAD*, not the win… don’t wanna be wrong on THAT ;)
