Brunell Injury: Cause for Concern?
The Washington Post reported that Mark Brunell missed practice yesterday in an effort to rest his elbow injury suffered last week.
In his two seasons with the Redskins, Brunell has struggled immensely after suffering injuries. He was hurting the entire 2004 season and was terrible after being hurt late in 2005:
| Year | Comp | Att | Comp % | Yrds/Game | TD | Int |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 | 118 | 237 | 49.8% | 171 | 7 | 6 |
| *2005 | 38 | 77 | 49.4% | 141 | 2 | 2 |
*includes the 3 games after Brunell’s injury (Phi, TB, Sea)
Those 2005 numbers are inflated by a decent performance against Seattle. In the two games following the injury Brunell was anemic. Does 41 yards passing against Tampa ring a bell? And who can forget that breathtaking 9 for 25 performance in the must-win season finale against Philly?
On the bright side, this isn’t a serious injury. The previous injuries were structural leg issues, this is a cut to the elbow. Brunell will have a bit more adrenaline pumping this week to help him ignore any pain. Going against a team that benched you just a couple years ago tends to motivate you to put up a good perfomance. Gibbs and the Redskins training staff are being smart about this, not letting Brunell throw and potentially aggravate the pain.
Let’s hope we see the decent Brunell this week. Forty-on passing yards isn’t going to beat the Jaguars.

The weird thing is, this is the same kind of injury that led to the end of his career in Jacksonville.

True, although I think it got infected which is why he ended up missing a bunch of time.

He didn’t have Bubba in Jacksonville. He’ll be as fine as his backside provided we can keep him off it.
