Ranting

Nothing like getting your ass completely handed to you. After these past few games, I have some things to get off my chest, so here we go:

  • I don’t know whether it’s the injuries or not, but Portis isn’t the same player he was late last year. He’s still young, so I doubt he’s lost a step. I just hope he’s actually hurting and not just sulking over the offense.
  • Make the QB change Coach. Brunell has probably played decent enough to keep his job, but this isn’t about performance. The Redskins as a team need something or someone to rally around, maybe Jason Campbell is that guy.
  • Adam Archuleta was a terrible signing. The guy may be the worst coverage safety I’ve ever seen. At least once a game the Skins opponents get a deep pass to a guy Archuleta is responsible for.
  • Can anyone explain why so many of the defensive players are performing so much worse this year? Lemar Marshall, Cornelius Griffin, Carlos Rogers and Marcus Washington are all prime examples.
  • The last two weeks the Skins have played terrible run defenses and both games the offensive line has been destroyed on all early run attempts. Al Saunders does have to run more, but when your RB is getting smoked 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage on nearly every run I see why he might abandon it.
  • Why did the Redskins trade a 3rd round pick for TJ Duckett? It made no sense at the time and it makes less sense now.
  • I’ve ripped a bunch of players here so lets give some credit where it is due. The two players who actually seem to care about what is happening here and are playing like they want to win are Sean Taylor and Santana Moss.
  • Shawn Springs – if you are hurt and not playing, don’t talk to the media. I love the guy and he’s the Skins best cornerback by a mile but he should stick to the rehab sessions and not the media scrums.
  • Fan complaints: 1) Don’t bitch about injuries. This team has been very healthy compared to most. The Colts had about 10 guys listed as questionable yesterday and they seemed to be able to handle it. 2) Don’t call someone who complains about the terrible performances a fair weather fan. I’m one of the biggest homers around and there just isn’t anything to be happy about.
  • If I hear one more time about the Redskins being happy going into the locker room at halftime, I’m going to lose it. They may have been winning, but the Colts were moving up and down the field with ease and the Redskins got a special teams touchdown. They should have realized they were lucky to be in the lead and made some serious adjustments.

Alright, I almost feel better now. Let’s here yours. Try to keep it clean.

  • My biggest rant is the refs… during the first 1/3 of the game, I thought it was called VERY well….

But from the moment of Randle-El’s punt return touchdown, it looked like the Refs had Horseshoes on their helmets. The Zebras, with bad calls, gave the Colts 3, and took away 3 from the Redskins, in the rest of that quarter… and it didn’t get better. They even tried to give the Colts a TOTALLY bogus TD (you could tell at full speed he wasn’t in, there should never have been a need for a booth review).

Yes, the Colts would have won anyway with that 3rd Quarter (last time I saw a quarter like that was back in 1988, IIRC, when a certain former Tampa Bay Bucanneer had the outstanding quarter in NFL Superbowl history… unfortunately, unlike that game, the quarter was AGAINST the Redskins, and not part of Redskin Superbowl History). But the score should have been 17-10 at the Half. And let’s not even talk about the Non-call that was an ACTUAL instance (where a Colt took a shot a Brunnell’s legs) versus the bogus call where the Colt literally pulled the DE into Manning. Yes, the guy is a superstar QB, but give me a break! The refs weren’t even close to non-biased in their calls. I’m sure Coach Gibbs will complain about that, and send tape to the league, but what does that ever get us?

And one last thing to complain about… why did the Colt’s DE (Freeney) get to line up in the neutral zone and offside (at least twice, I paid attention after the first time I caught him lined up in the Neutral Zone (five times lining up in the zone, lining up OFFSIDES twice, for seven plays he wasn’t on his side of the line of scrimmage)) without it being called by the Refs? I mean, was the line ref not even LOOKING at the way players were lined up? Was it any wonder he put pressure on Brunnell, and caused so many holding penalties, when he’s half a yard or more offsides?

  • Yeah,

Definitely bias with the officiating in that game. It’s such a SHAME! And Gibbs could probably send a tape to the office, but it won’t do a DAMNED thing. They don’t give a f*&$@.

We lost to a better team. BUT, we have just as much, OR, probably more talented players than do the Colts. Why can’t we ever capitalize. We should have a winning record going into this bye week. Instead, our playoff hopes are probably completely gone now.

I dream of a day that we BEAT other teams. Not win by 3 or 7 points, but win by many more. Having confidence after the half to drink a beer and say, DAMN, we’re definitely winning this game, and we’re gonna go beat whoever we’re playing next week. Instead, now, I just avoid the media for the entire week, when I should look forward to all our highlights of touchdowns and good plays. This hasn’t happened for many years now. There needs to be change, starting with the quarterback, NOW.

  • Good roundup. Ugh. The Longest Week Ever starts in Redskinsland. BTW, I’ve linked this rant over at Curly R.

  • Bill you are right on. I saw several neutral zone infractions, and don’t forget the helmet to helmet on Brunnell in the 3rd when it still could have been a game.

  • we are losing a fact is a fact, put Campbell in,tell me what is the worst that can happen?we lose!!!!at least give us a little something to smile about, even if we lose we get a very early jump on next year!its a win win situation

  • 1. go with Collins, Brunell is done.

    2. Archuleta move to linbacker replacing Holman. Vincent takes his safety spot.

3.go back to the red pants.

  • Dave, I think you meant:

    1. Go with Cambell. Brunnell, while still capable, isn’t comfortable, and he’s not the long term answer. He’s a good enough QB to start in the league… but not in this offense, and his league life is too short to do anything with.

    2) Vincent over Archuleta. Archuleta to linebacker over the ineffective Warrick Holman.

    3) Go back to uniforms from the classic days, when the Redskins were feared… when the Burgundy pants made the opposing Offense believe they were seeing blood (and hiding the blood they were seeing!).

  • First of all. I loved the first half. They looked like they were playing for something. Good first half and the run defense did a great job there too.

Hey we played a good team, but they weren’t as good as the score. I’m tired of being pissed and trying to calculate who should be where on the field. But…. No one has yet mentioned that Chris Samuels couldn’t block a little girl from going to the potty! That was the worst…and I mean absolute worst performances from a left tackle I think I have ever seen. Bugel has some talent in the line. Yes he built the hogs, but his guys don’t and can’t block to this offensive scheme.

I agree with the postive side and giving some Kudos. Moss and Taylor keep it up. Taylor… hit harder I love it. Get a few more penalties, at least its fun to watch. Cooley, dude get this guy in the game. Let him run the ball. He is the ONLY Redskin that can carry two or three guys for a few extra yards. Randel El, I’m for you man. You make things happen even when they don’t.

Finally Fans… do not give up. Yes the season is over, but if we give up, thats puts us up there with Dallas Fans. Show some love. If you want to hate someone, go with Snyder, he’s the only one thats been there since 92.

And that thing about fair weather fans… well I’m not, but they should be lucky to have any fans, even if just a fair weather one. Last time I checked it was us who foot the bill for those salaries.

Fight for Ole DC Gentelmen, Win one for the Gipper, Don’t get caught with your pants down, … whatever you do… beat the crap out of Dallas.

  • Hey, I’m no fairweather fan… I’ve told my wife (jokingly, but I’ll bet she does it) to put a Redskin T-Shirt in the coffin with me when I die.

And I’m a huge Joe Gibbs fan…. and I even think Snyder has done OK, although he’s still only getting a “C” (the Norv-Marty-Steve change DEFINITELY brought him down. Getting rid of Norv and bringing in Marty… totally different offensive philosophy, but ok… we’ll rebuild for a few years. Firing Marty after one year, when he is starting to build HIS team DUMB. Especially when you go to a team that would have been better with Norv players…. in other words, Flush the Coach and Players, rebuild. Flush the Coach and Players, rebuild…. in consecutive seasons??? You can’t BUILD on that. My one complaint against Joe… he “Flushed the Coach” (himself) when he brought in Saunders…. and changed AGAIN which players best match the style of the team. He has a chance RIGHT NOW to start building the team for the new Offense for next year… and instead, we’ll see more Brunnell. Brunnell was fine for the old Offense… but not this one.

  • “Dave, I think you meant: Go with Cambell. Brunnell, while still capable, isn’t comfortable, and he’s not the long term answer. He’s a good enough QB to start in the league… but not in this offense, and his league life is too short to do anything with.”

I wouldn’t doubt he meant Collins. I feel similarly, to be honest. I think Campbell is the future. And the almost present. But I believe we need someone like Collins, someone who understands the offense, and has the arm to make every throw, and the ability to really show the entire team what Saunders wants to accomplish.

I know he’s a career back-up, and Campbell has talent out the wazoo, but I think we have to get the train on track before we expect it to move.

  • no, give Collins a chance first to maybe salvage this year. Maybe Collins can give them a spark. First he knows the system, is big and strong and has never really been given a chance. Who knows? If he can’t get anything going then go with Cambell

  • Good discussion here. Couple of things from me:
    1) You can’t fire Gibbs. This team’s major problem is from changing things all the time. Gibbs has proven he’s a winner and even last year he showed that he can get this team to the playoffs. There is no one out there who’d I rather have coaching the Skins.
    2) I have no clue what to do with Archuleta. He’s beyond useless in coverage. I don’t think he’s big enough to play linebacker though. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more and more of Vincent as he learns what he’s doing in this defense.
    3) I guess we might as well get used to Brunell. To me a QB change now would be more of a ’spark the team’ move than a performance issue. Maybe the team could rally behind a Campbell or Collins.

One last thing, if anyone has any desire to write for the site let me know. Everyone who’s commented here has made well put together arguments and a solid grasp of the english language. I can’t really give you anything besides an audience, although if the site ever became a million dollar entity I’m sure I’d hook ya up.
