Defense Dooms Skins – Again
It was the same old story for the Redskins again on Sunday. They blew another lead and came up short in a game they could have easily won. The Rams rebounded from a 14 point deficit to pull out a 37-31 overtime victory. Stephen Jackson’s 21-yard touchdown run in overtime was the game clinching score.
The Skins had no answer for Jackson. He was quicker than the linebackers and ran over the secondary, especially Vernon Fox, when he got into the open field. Jackson finished with 150 rushing yards and 102 receiving yards to up his NFC leading scrimmage yards to 2168.
Offensively the Skins were once again led by Ladell Betts, who had his 5th straight 100-yard rushing game. Betts reached the 1000 yard mark for the 1st time his career. All wasn’t roses for Betts however, his 4th quarter fumble ruined the Redskins chances for a regulation win and ended up giving the game to the Rams. Jason Campbell was his usual erratic self, finishing 13 for 26 for 160 yards and a touchdown pass. Chris Cooley was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 77 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Shawn Springs’ value to the Skins was once again highly evident. The Skins had put up consecutive strong defensive performances, but when Springs went out, the defense went back to their sieve-like selves. Marc Bulger had nearly 400 yards passing and threw for 4 touchdowns. Bulger and the Rams continually picked on Kenny Wright and Ade Jimoh and had a field day offensively.
With the win, the Rams remain alive in the NFC playoff chase. The Redskins can help them out by beating the Giants in next Saturday’s season finale. While this has been a pitiful season for the Redskins, knocking the Giants out of the playoffs would be a decent consolation prize.
