Dr Z is an asshole Cowboy fan. Irvin had the best running back off all time on his team, a great offensive line and the same QB. Monk had 200 more catches and 2 ALL TIME RECOREDS WHEN HE RETIRED. THESE IDIOT AND THEIR REASONS ARE KILLING ME. When did Gary Clark and Rickey Sanders become more than good role players. Monk had a sore armed Theisman and a wild Rypien throwing to him. I realy hate Dr Z a true fool.

So sad. Anyone w\class & intelligence clearly knows and understands this is a watershed moment in NFL HoF history: a clearly deserving classy player who was\is a great role model for our younger generation being passed over in favor of me-first players with criminal records and horrendous character (yes it does matter!). We MUST organize a large group of people to protest Irvin’s selection in Canton next summer—use blown-up copies of past press clippings and arrest reports as banners, etc. Let’s get some mug shot photos as well, and carry banners that scream out how bogus and unacceptable Irvin’s selection is. Unfortunately, that’s about all we can do. Follow Irvin’s playing & lifestyle mode and make it an ugly, horrible experience that require the procession to be halted due to potential riots . Again, it is fact that while Irvin was a very good player, he did drugs, had a criminal record (beat up woman too), was abusive and a show-boat and didn’t like getting hit. Thurman Thomas pouted, and forgot his helmet in a super bowl which led to a botched hand-off and fumble and the first of many touchdowns in the Redskin’s 3rd Super Bowl triumph. Bruce Matthews over Grimm? Yes indeed the press has it out for the Redskins.

God Bless you Art! Pls plan to go to "The Revolt in Canton Summer 2007""!! Book your travel plans now!!

Bob:

Dr. Z is full of it; Irvin had a couple of other receivers who were figured to be top flight at the time, including Calvin Harper. The fact that they were nearly as good as Irvin while playing for the Cowboys and were awful once they went to other teams shows me that it wasn't the RECIEVERS that were good, but the system and the QB. Irvin only looks decent because he never left that system and that QB.

That actually HURTS him in my opinion as a potential Hall selection... yet the newswriters voted him in anyway. Which kind of proves what folks have been saying all along: the writers out there dislike Monk because they couldn't get him to say things they could blow up in stories, while Irvin's LIFE allowed them ample easy stories; if you want in to the Hall, feed the sportswriters easy stuff so their lazy hind ends don't have to work for anything.

THAT'S why Art isn't in the Hall: he had too much class.

Riggo, If we don't get a win next year with Darrell Green then I'll be truly surprised. I guess having a great wide receiver on a totally balance team in the 80s hurts Monk. At least he knows what he means to Skins fans.

SI.COM: Why didn't Art Monk get elected?

DR. Z: My feeling is that Monk was [a] great player. But when you played the Redskins, he was not the guy you had to stop. He was a very functional player. A great team guy. But I liked two wideouts better this year. Irvin and Andre Reed. (Bob's addendum: later he mentions how Irvin never had a great complementary WR, whereas Monk, with Clark, most certainly did.)

Will the improvement of receivers' statistics in recent years hurt Monk's chances of making it in the future?

Oh yeah. I think his best chance might have been when he first came on the ballot, because he was still near the top of the all-time lists then, but he' falling.

Is there any word on WHY he wasn't selected? I can't believe Michael Irvin could POSSIBLY get in before Monk.
