Redskins Win, 1st Team Offense Sputters

Jason Cambell sacked

For all the talk of this pre-season being different, it sure looked just like last year. The Washington Redskins 1st team offense was shut out over a full half of action in yesterday’s 14-6 victory over Tennessee.

Jason Campbell looked similar to the QB we saw last year, not the one who had earned raves all off-season. He was inconsistent – mixing great passes with wildly inaccurate throws. His best pass came on a out pattern to Antwaan Randle-El, he also had a nice medium range connection with Santana Moss. The downside was a couple of fumbles on sacks, one of which was lost.

The biggest concern was probably the offensive line, although I’m not sure that is to be unexpected. This was Todd Wade’s 1st action at guard and they were starting a rookie at left tackle in place of Chris Samuels. The biggest concern might continue to be Jon Jansen, who looked like the player who lost a step in 2006 than the old reliable work horse of previous years.

Defensively, the Redskins 1st until was fairly solid with London Fletcher standing out. Special teams wise the punt coverage was bad, Derrick Frost looked good and Shaun Suisham missed his only attempt.

The Redskins offense came very late in the game. Todd Collins came in and led the team straight down the field by going 5 for 5. Marcus Mason capped off a nice evening with a 1 yard TD plunge to give the Redskins a 7-6 lead. The other touchdown came on a muffed Tennessee snap that ended up being recovered by Byron Westbrook in the endzone.
