Hardly an Open Competition

Today’s Washington Post featured a Jason La Confora article about the “open” competition between Mark Brunell and Todd Collins. This is what we call a filler piece, class. Jason knows as well as everyone else in the world that the competition is about as open as Sean Taylor is to the media.

Mark Brunell will be the back-up barring an act of God. Nothing short of his arm falling off during one of his patented dump off passes to Ladell Betts is going to change that. I’m sure the coaching staff would love for Brunell to look good during the pre-season to end any possible debate, but I really don’t think it’s a factor.

Brunell gimped his way through last year and still managed to keep the starting job for half the year. Anyone thinking he’s dropping down to the number 3 slot is fooling themselves.

To be honest, it’s the right choice as well. Brunell isn’t exactly a fan favorite, but at least he’s played in a regular season game recently. I don’t want to say Todd Collins hasn’t started in a while, but in his last start as an NFL QB he faced a young up and comer passer in Jacksonville named Mark Brunell.

Collins is nothing more than a de-factor assistant coach for Al Saunders these days. You may hate Brunell, but if Jason Campbell goes down, he will be the guy under center this year.

UPDATE: I may be looking dumb shortly – Bram Weinstein is reporting that Todd Collins will come in as the number 2 QB vs the Steelers this week. I still maintain this is Brunell’s job until further notice.

First of all, this site gets sooo much better when there is something going on worth talking about. But I do agree, there has to be something more than who is in competition for the number 2 spot on the QB depth chart.

I heard Riggo Radio the other night talking about potential Redskins w/o potential. Clinton Portis was top of the list… period! I agree. This training camp and preseason needed a banner the first day.. whiners go home..NOW. I am already tired of hearing of Todd Wade can’t get adjusted (moron can’t figure out which hand to put down for his stance) Brandon Lloyd is a liability with his mouth, and CG keeps making excuses. Please, this year, give me 11 guys on both sides of the ball that want to be there more than anything in the world..good bad or indifferent.
