Cuts Coming Soon

The Redskins have to cut down to 75 players by Tuesday, but some will likely be released today. I’ll update this post as anything come in.

UPDATE: 1st batch is in:

  • DB Jerametrius Butler
  • DE Jamaal Green
  • LB Kevin Jones
  • WR Jerel Myers
  • WR Todd Pinkston
  • DT Bryant Shaw

Pinkston may surprise some people because he is a name, but coming back after a year off doesn’t happen often. The Redskins actually tried to sign Butler as a restricted free agent a few years back, but he’s obviously lost whatever he once had.

UPDATE: Jason LaConfora is reporting on his blog that Joe Salave’a has been cut.

  • I actually half expected Pinkston to be cut; he’s been out of the league, and was at the end of his career anyway. Butler is the big surprise to me; I expected that he would be useful depth at DB for the Redskins, and had (in the past) been effective on special teams (Kickoff coverage, especially). Gibbs has always tended to keep the good special teams players a little longer. Of the others, Jones is moderately notable, as he got a few long looks with the second team LBs, but that’s all, and some people thought that Shaw would end up being a late cut/practice squad player; he still might end up on the practice squad down the road, though. Myers and Green are basically “Oh, were they at camp? Musta been camp fodder”

  • I’ve seen it confirmed in a few spots; Salvae’e has been cut. That’s a BIG shocker, biggest of the preseason for the Redskins, as Salvae’e was looking to be the number one DT off the bench; that means he’d play about 30% of the plays from scrimmage.

    WOW!

I can’t believe he won’t land somewhere quick, though, as a lot of teams need depth there. Could this be a Salary Cap move prelude to signing Cooley to a long contract?
