The Washington Redskins could have most of their starting offense intact for the 1st time this pre-season on Thursday as Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis could both suit up for the game versus Jacksonville (who made this pre-season schedule? Its great defense after great defense). Pete Kendall could also see his 1st action with Washington this week. Chris Samuels is not expected to play.
Joe Gibbs has not committed to playing either Campbell or Portis, calling both game-time decisions. Campbell isn’t a big surprise as his knee injury wasn’t serious and seems to really want to get back in the line-up and get more reps with the starters. The news on Portis is a bit of a surprise as he’s been milking the knee tendonitis for all its worth. I expect Portis received a little nudge from Gibbs or someone else with the team that if he doesn’t get some action in the pre-season (practice or game), he might end up behind Ladell Betts on the depth chart to start the year.
I wouldn’t expect to see Clinton more than 6-8 plays (or two series, whichever comes first) as they don’t want a repeat of last year. However, Cambell needs a bit more time; he’s been slightly erratic and we need him to be steadier for the season. Luckily, we’ve got a bit of time after J-ville to heal any minor issues and to get depth practice and walkthroughs for Miami.
