Jason Campbell throws versus the Eagles

When we look back on the 2007 season, last night’s game might not seem all that impressive. Perhaps the wheels have fallen off the Philadelphia Eagles run and they are about to embark on a tough season. But right now that is one huge win. Going into Philadelphia, playing in prime time and coming out with a well-deserved 20-12 victory sends a message to the rest of the league that the Washington Redskins just may be ready to make some noise this year.

Positives

  • The defense was great again. They managed three sacks and for the most part had decent pressure all night. It helped that Donovan McNabb spent the first three quarters missing nearly every throw, but it was still a nice effort. When you can hold a decent offense like the Eagles without a TD and you’re using your 5th cornerback (Leigh Torrance) on the final drive, that’s a good nights work.
  • Gregg Williams. Last year the Redskins defense was predictable. It was either wild out of control blitzes or cover two. Williams never adjusted based on the opponent. Last night was a refreshing change. After seeing the Eagles receivers struggle against the Packers bump and run coverage, the Redskins copied their formula with great success. The Philly receivers couldn’t get off the line and were well covered for most of the night.
  • The Offensive Line. For all the talk of exotic blitzes and confusion the Eagles were going to cause last night, Jason Campbell had time to throw and all rushers were picked up. The running game wasn’t dominate, but it was another nice performance and one that controlled the clock when the need arised.
  • Jason Campbell. At least from that two minute drill on, Campbell was poised and made some great throws, including that glorious TD pass to Chris Cooley late in the 2nd quarter. The interception was a big mistake and he still can be wild on some shorter throws, but Campbell makes plays when it counts as shown by the much improved third down performance this year.
  • Joe Gibbs. I can’t remember the last time the Redskins went into Philadelphia and completely out-coached the Eagles, but it happened last night. Washington look focused and crisp while the Eagles floundered for the most of the game. Pulling back the field goal unit after the Eagles ‘ice’ the kicker timeout was a smart call even if it hadn’t worked out, but after the TD it looked ’super-smart’

Negatives

  • Randy Thomas’ injury. That one hurts big time. There is no Todd Wade waiting to come in at the guard spot and Jason Fabini is a big step down in terms of talent. The Redskins started picking up false starts as soon as Fabini came into the game. I’m sure some of that was nerves and unfamiliarity, but lets for good news from the MRI, despite Thomas’ thoughts that he’s done for the year.
  • 3rd wide receivers. James Thrash supplanted Brandon Lloyd in the line-up and turned in a typical Redskins 3rd receiver stat line: 0 catches for 0 yards. Reche Caldwell may not be great, but he’s got to better than this.

Bring on the Giants.

  • Jason Campbell is the real deal; there are only two negative takeaways for the game.

    - His interception, once again caused by staring down a receiver. It’s starting to look like he needs to throw a pick to get the nervousness out of his system and become calm and cool.

    - His miss of a wide open Santana Moss. Jason has the killer instinct, but he let the knife slip when it came time to slide it into the Eagle’s hopes last night with that overthrow. I can’t help but think that that play will return later in the season, with different results, as young JC matures even further; by this time next year, in a similar situation, at the 1:10 second mark, we won’t be looking at “Oh please hold them on this play!” and we’ll be in “Yeah, too little, too late! JC just sealed the deal with that bomb to (Cooley/Moss/El/Betts/etc.)”

On the other hand, how could Chris Cooley drop that early pass that would have done nearly the same thing, deflate the Eagles once and for all and let them know they are playing to keep it respectible?

  • I forgot to mention the biggest negative… the tv. It was like the game was background music to some ESPN show. Way too many cut aways and storylines that had nothing to do with the game and not enough talk about what is actually happening. Its too bad too, because Jaws can bring some good stuff (i.e. the shot with how Campbell had started to move his eyes away from his receivers), but instead it was one quarter talking about Andy Reid’s kids and another talking about McNabb and the Philly fans. Just terrible.

  • You can call me negative, but I am very worried about the losses along the offensive line. Campbell’s progress will obviously be stunted quickly as he’s running for his life.

Hopefully in next year’s draft the ’skins can work to address both the offensive and defensive line.

I still think they’ll beat the Giants.

How wild would it be if the 3-0 Redskins took on the 4-0 Lions?
