Pigskin Pick’em Week 8 results

Week 8 of the season saw the Redskins-Patriots debacle, and I’m going to break tradition with a little editorial before I get to the week’s results.  While many are saying that they “have no problem with anything that happened”, I want to state for the record that the situation is one of class; when the Redskins played the Broncos in the Superbowl some years back, after a 35-0 run in the second quarter, Coach Gibbs specifically called off the dogs; the Redskins sole second half touchdown was a serious breakdown on the Broncos part.  Coach Gibbs could have put up 70 that day; winning 42-10, however, was his way of showing CLASS, something missing in Bill Belichick.  While the Patriots are a good, even great, team, the coach himself has no class.

On a purely Redskin basis, this is the worst season I can recall since 1981 for injuries to key players, which was known in some circles as the bloodbath season; however, even that season didn’t see the depth being injured this severely.  Good news is that we won the Show the next year, and went 14-2 and lost the show the year after; maybe all of these injuries will allow our depth to season, as they have to step up as starters for the rest of the season.  What’s sad is that the Redskins are still a credible threat to at least earn a Wildcard berth in the NFC playoffs, even after the nearly total destruction of the team because of those injuries.  How many games we will end up losing this year because of injuries, I don’t yet know, but I have to think that both the loss to the Giants and the loss to the Packers had injuries as a major part of the reason that we lost; both teams should have fallen.

Now that the editorials are out of the way, for some, week 8 was a good week in the Pigskin Pick’em, but for those who didn’t play, and let the default home team be their pick, they only picked up a mere 3 games.  Leading the way this week was John Sawyer with 12 games picked correctly, nearly perfect in a week where there were only 13 games, followed by S. Michael Young, M. Edmunds, S.K. and myself, with 11.  Weekly Kudos to all of those players for their excellent weeks.

Upset Pick of the Week wasn’t an upset to me, but seemed to be a big upset to most players, as Detroit beat Chicago.  John Sawyer, R.F. and myself all made those picks, earning Upset Pick of the Week Kudos.

Season Props continue to go to me, which is somewhat embarrassing; I came in a measly 7th last season (having faded badly during this stretch of the season), though I have been hot for the most part this year.  A. Fishman is still in second, now two games back behind me.  However, always remember this:  I can’t win it.  That means that REGARDLESS of how I do, you only have to beat the other 20 players (Lee Gibbons can’t win, either).  Remember, the system will pick for you, but you’ll only get about 60% in the long run letting the system pick (this week, that meant that you allowed Carolina over Indianapolis, for example).  So pick it to win it!

Bring on the Jets, and Hail to the Redskins!

  • I’m tired of all the whining about score run up. You’re right, Gibbs wouldn’t have done it…but he doesn’t do it with a one touchdown lead. The Patriots man-handled a top-rated defense and they could have done so much more.

  • Interesting observation for you, keef, before we stop talking about the running up the score.

The Redskins, with a solitary exception, all said that it was part of the game, that they had no problem with it, and that, “If we don’t want them to run up the score, then we stop them.” Only one player broke that rank. The media, to a man, has said the same thing, at least publicly; even Wilbon at the WaPost has said it that way.

Answer me this, then: if that’s true, then why are the media continually hyping that it was the Redskins fault if the Patriots continued to run up the score, after the game was all but over? Say it once, and move on; instead, EVERY media report has reported it, ad nauseum, including just to continually say how it’s not an issue.

There’s an old saying; where there is smoke, there’s fire. And it seems everyone is out there screaming as loud as they can that there isn’t any smoke, nothing to see here, move along, move along…. I’m pretty sure that means there IS smoke; folks are just trying to keep it down.

With that, I’m done on the subject for now on, except to say “Go Colts”. There’s a new Evil Empire in the NFL.

  • It doesn’t matter anyway…once a team has already won the game, they’ve taken the opponent out of their gameplan, making them one-dimensional. It’s a complete classless act on Belichick’s part, especially against a Hall of Fame coach like Gibbs. There is no justification to running up the score, especially when players and coaches serve as role models for younger generations. How does it look when someone intentionally blows out another team while kids are looking up to these chumps. It’s a matter of ethics, not ability at that point. “GO COLTS” is right…
