Pigskin Pick’em 2007 Week 17 Final Report! We have a winner!

Welcome back, Pigskin Pickers, to the final 2007 Pigskin Pick’em Weekly update, and of course, our Season Winner report.  After the Redskins dominate Dallas with a decidedly devastating defensive delivery (OK, I’ll stop the alliteration), our ‘Skins are in the playoffs, bound for Seattle this week.  However, the conclusion of the Regular Season also brings to an end the 2007 Pigskin Pick’em contest.  Before we get into the accolades, I’d like to thank Lee Gibbons for hosting the event, and supplying the prize for our winner, an authentic Washington Redskins Jersey.  We’ll be looking for one last update (from Lee, at some point) with a picture of the winner showing off the new Jersey sometime late this month, or during early February.

Most players did well, though the default strategy of picking Home Teams payed off very well this week, as well.  Weekly Honors go to M. Edmonds for one last, valiant push to try to move up into the top five… and with 13 of 16, he succeeded, leapfrogging over a number of other players (oh, and apologies to anyone I call a “he” who is decidedly not a “he”; I got called on that last week by one of our players who emphatically is not a he, but a she).  Jon Martin also earned the weekly Kudos for his 13 of 16 performance, which popped him up into 6th place for the season.  Kudos, guys!

Upset Pick of the Week is Houston over Jacksonville.  M. Edmonds, T. Berry, John Sawyer, and Jon Martin (as well as those who went with the default home team for all their picks) all foresaw Jacksonville rolling over heading into the playoffs.  Upset Pick of the Week Kudos to those folks for their pick!

And the drum-roll please….   Last year, for pretty much the entire season, there was a nearly wall to wall leader, with the winner leading or in second place pretty much from week 3 onward.  This year, there were only two people who EVER led at any point;  one player (OK, ME) led pretty much either by myself, or tied with someone else (early) led through week 9; a disaster in week 9 let my closest competition catch and just leap over me; a few weeks later, I fell back to four games out.  And that was the end, as A. Fishman never let up on the gas, and never faltered in any week, never losing any of that hard won ground (although if Indy had pulled off the win last night at home, I would have gained 2 games of the four in the final game of the season; darn you, Peyton Manning!).  So, all Hail to the Redskins, and all Hail to A. Fishman, our 2007 Redskin Report Pigskin Pick’em Contest Winner!  Please contact Lee here on the site via email with your address and Jersey request so that he can get that Jersey out to you.

Overall, our prognosticating skills were outstanding; we had a few very poor weeks as a group, but overall, we ended up (even those who stopped actively playing) doing very well; the final average is at least 10 games higher this year than last for total number of games picked right, and most folks made it to the seminal 150 pick win line.  Last year, only the top 8 players made it to that, so give yourselves a hand!

And here, in all it’s glory, saved for posterity, is the final standings of the contest for 2007.

Bill – thanks for taking the lead on this. The prize was a replica jersey, just to clear up any confusion.

    A. Fishman – congrats. You can leave a comment here with an email that I can reach you at or you can use the contact form up in the top menu bar to get a hold of me and get your prize out to you.

Wow. I am truly stunned to have won this thing. Thank you to all of you for making this so fun.

According to ESPN’s web site, I won’t win anything from then (only the top 3 win, unfortunately). Close, but no cigar. Next year, perhaps…

You can reach me at fishman@pobox.com. Go Skins!
