The thing i remember most about Wilbur was his eyes. That guy was freaking intense. A true “Smashmouth” linebacker.

Chief, yes, I’m an old KC (for those who don’t know (most of you), there are two high schools in Virginia Beach that are “KHS”; Kempsville uses KC as in Kempsville Chiefs to differentiate itself from the slightly older Kellam) Grad, and used to play on those fields myself, years ago, across from Kemps Landing.

As for DJ being THE BEST athlete to come out of Tidewater, I think there are a few NFL HoFers who would beg to differ, along with a few other players… but he may have been the greatest High School Football, and even college, player out of the era from Tidewater.

For that matter (Sorry, DJ!) DJ may not even be the best athlete out of his own era at Kempsville. How can you ignore Yogi Hightower and all she did? Of course, they didn’t QUITE attend together, because Kempsville only did 10-12 back then; Yogi graduated the year before DJ came to KC, in 1979, though they would have attended together in nearly any other high school in the country during DJ’s Freshman year otherwise. Yeah, Yogi was in Field Hockey… but she’s still one of those “Jim Thorpe” style legends in Womens Field Hockey, and of course an Olympic Gold Medalist. JR Reid, of course, was a great athlete, too, but not up to DJs stature, even if he did have a successful NBA career. And that’s just KEMPSVILLE. Lawrence Taylor, Bruce Smith, Michael Vick, etc., all have a claim to having a much more productive career than DJ in the NFL, and if I recall correctly, Bruce Smith did play against DJ once in 1980, when we played Lake Taylor. I believe we won.

Still, doesn’t stop DJ from being one of the classiest guys I knew back then.

A Kempsville grad? I remember watching D.J. jack home runs at the pony/colt field that used to land on the roof of High’s Ice Cream. He may be the best athlete to come out of the Tidewater area, and that is saying something.

Wilbur deserved every bit of this and more!!! This career ended any type of activity for Wilbur. He can barely walk now due to so many injuries. All he ask for was what he EARNED and DESERVED.

A great player and one generous kindhearted athlete!!

Don’t feel too bad for him…anyone who makes millions for several years and can’t make things work financially for them causes his bankrupsy himself. The NFL did not cause this.
