Coaching and Injury News

Is this coaching stuff over yet?

  • Stump Mitchell is officially in at running back coach. He previously held the same position with Seattle. He replaces Earnest Byner who is no longer with the Redskins. Byner did a decent job here, and I’m sure he’ll land on his feet somewhere.
  • It is sounding more and more like Sherman Smith will accept the Redskins offer and become the team’s new offensive coordinator. He is waiting to meet with Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher, but most reports expect him to take the job. Of course, we all know nothing is finalized until a contract is signed, so let’s wait for the official announcement before thinking this is over with. A final decision is expected sometime today.
  • Thanks to this find by Dan Steinberg, Chris Meidt has officially beomce my new favorite coach on the staff. He’s a big numbers guy, and apparantly loves the surprise onside kicks and faking extra points. He may officially be the anti-Joe Gibbs.
  • Good and bad news on the injury front. Carlos Rogers likely will not be ready for the beginning of the season as he recovers from a complete blow out of his knee suffered last year. According to trainers, he’ll be ready sometime in September or October. On a better note, Rocky McIntosh is expected back for the start of the year. His injury wasn’t as bad as Rogers and he should be set to come on opening day. Does this put an end to the Lance Briggs rumors? Doubt it.
  • “No one within the Bengals organization has ever spoken of or ever uttered anything about trading Chad Johnson, nor will he be traded. … So I think that’s pretty clear. Things can move on.” And with that Marvin Lewis should have put an end to any rumors of the Redskins acquiring Chad Johnson. Of course this won’t stop any reporting as agent Drew Rosenhaus will continue to float reports and Dan Snyder will continue to be intrigued with shiny things.

Hat tip to my pals at Hog Haven as a few of these links were found via his site.
