Why Scouting Matters

If you ever wondered why late round draft picks are so important to building an NFL team, the Redskins salary cap figures for next year provide a great example.   In the 2006 draft the Redskins landed Anthony Montgomery in the 5th round and Reed Doughty and Kedric Golston in the 6th round. (future article idea – why Vinny Ceratto isn’t as bad as you think).  Montgomery is going cost $486,000 against the cap this year, Doughty is at $474,000 and Golston is at $467,000.  All three players started at times for the Redskins in the past two years and they all may end up starting for this year’s team yet their cap hit ranks below such immortals as:

  • Todd Yoder $847,000
  • Vernon Fox $705,000
  • And three guys who are likely camp fodder – Eddie Jackson, Billy McMullen and Kevin Sampson – $605,000

Undrafted free agents are even bigger bargains, guys like Chris Wilson (pictured), Lorenzo Alexander, Anthony Mix and Stephen Heyer all contributed at various points last year and are among a group of players with the lowest cap hit on the roster ($350,000)

Amazingly, the Washington Redskins actually have a full slate of draft picks for this year’s draft, so there is hope that they may uncover another diamond in the rough.
