Rumor: Redskins to Get 3rd Round Compensation Pick

Take this with a grain of salt for now, but according to some fan calculations on the KFFL message board the Washington Redskins may be in line to receive a 3rd round compensatory pick in this year’s draft.

The NFL offers up compensatory picks for team’s that lose players via free agency. The picks are determined by the value of the contracts of players lost versus value of contracts of free agents added. As you may recall, the Buffalo Bills signed Derrick Dockery to an obscenely expensive contract last year so the Skins could be in line for a high pick. There are off-sets due to signings (i.e. London Fletcher), so don’t take this as gospel yet, but an extra 3rd round pick would be nice.

UPDATE: Latest rumors have the Redskins also getting two 7th round picks. The 3rd round pick would be for losing Dockery, the 7th rounders would be for losing Warrick Holdman and Kenny Wright (I guess those guys aren’t useless). See http://adamjt13.blog.com/ for the full breakdown. This Adam is a pretty well respected ‘expert’ at working out these picks. Rich Tandler says the 9 picks would be the most for the Redskins since 2002.

Also – I’ve been saying the Redskins have a full slate of draft picks, but their 4th rounder is on its way to Denver to finalize the terrible TJ Duckett trade. I had apparently suppressed any memories of that awful display by the Redskins front office.

BallHype: hype it up!

  • the Redskins need to try and lure a big name
reciever Chad Johnson is a perfect fit

  • I think most teams would love to get a Chad Johnson type player, but the Bengals have made it pretty clear they aren’t moving him. I’m not sure the Redskins would be willing to part with what it would cost to trade for him either.

I do think they’ll get a receiver sometime this off-season though.

  • Of course the Redskins will pick up a receiver during the offseason; however, how and when they choose to pick one up, and which one, is the true question.

I have no doubt the Redskins get face time with at least three or four players in “Need” positions between now and the draft. They will probably choose to acquire at least one or two of those before the draft, to allow them to concentrate on specific need and to allow them to use the draft for quality depth in the later rounds. In June, a whole new crop of Free Agents will also come available. They may not be quite as sexy as the Randy Mosses and Asante Samuels of the league, but there will be quality players released in June, and I expect that contrary to the early FA signing period, after the draft and in the June period, we’ll see a bit more activity. We’ll know exactly where to focus down. Of course, it’s harder to predict that specific players will be available, if they are targeting specific ones; they’ll be dealing at least partially with the leftover.

But leftovers can be good too.

  • Weren’t we talking about Javon Walker as a potential cheap WR – apparently the Raiders don’t agree.

6 years – 55 million with 16 million guaranteed!! Whoa.

Anyone who thinks the Redskins are poorly run, should be grateful they don’t cheer for the Raiders.. .wow.

  • WOW! The Raiders need to get a big bodyguard to stave off having more Agents beat them up and take their lunch money, because they just got robbed.

I guess the Raiders panicked. That’s probably 3 1/2 TIMES more money that Javon Walker is worth.
