Poised to Strike and other thoughts

As I prepare to dig myself out from yet another snow storm (stupid Canada), here are some random thoughts on the Redskins and the NFL week that was:
- The Redskins are still going to make a big move – likely a trade – this off-season. Why else do they continue to fiddle with contracts to give themselves more cap room? Some player is going to get ticked with their team – take a look at the ‘franchised’ players list to start – and the Redskins are going to be poised to strike (that photo is an illustration of a fox poised to strike and not some random animal photo… I did think that through a bit).
- Rock Cartwright is a valuable player, but he’s also not the kinda guy teams are going to pay much more than the minimum. I don’t blame him for searching for a contract, but the odds are he’ll be back in the burgundy and gold next year.
- The Oakland Raiders have got to be the worst managed team in the NFL today. First they pay 50.5 million dollars for Tommy Kelly, who is a decent enough player, but come on now. And they manage to top that by paying Javon Walker 55 million dollars. Walker’s injury prone and seems to be on the decline of his career, so why is he getting paid like Randy Moss.
- Besides being dumb, the Walker signing may also hinder the Redskins hopes of signing a receiver on the cheap. Guys like DJ Hackett might be asking for a bit more money and with the number of established wide-outs on the market reduced by one, the price could go higher than the Redskins want to pay.
- It snuck under the radar but my fellow Canuck Shaun Suisham re-signed with the Redskins recently. The question now becomes will the team bring in any legitimate competition for the kicking job or is Suisham the guy? Suisham has a decent year, but after that playoff miss, he’s going to need to regain the trust of a lot of Redskins’ fans.
- With the Redskins seemingly taking the free agent off-season off, you’ll be sad to know that the NFL draft is still 50 days away. Fifty days!!! If there is no Redskins news between now and then you can look forward to the updates on The Redskin Report getting more and more incoherent as I slowly lose my mind trying to come up with something to write about.
