Rock’s Signing is Bad News For Marcus Mason

Rock Cartwright

Not everyone is happy the Redskins re-signed KR Rock Cartwright.

While the fans and likely most of the locker room is pleased that a team leader and an underrated special teamer is back in the burgundy and gold, there is always another side to each move. Players get swung down the depth chart, someone may end up getting cut, so it isn’t all high-fives and fist bumps among Redskins’ players at Rock’s return.

The player who had the most to gain if Cartwright left the team was last year’s pre-season sensation Marcus Mason. He would have likely been moved into the #3 running-back slot and would have been given a shot to take over as the primary kick-off returner. Now with Cartwright back in the fold, Mason is again forced to battle for a roster spot and his most likely destination is back on the practice squad.

Other players are in the same boat as Mason and hoping the Redskins’ off-season inactivity continues. Guys like Anthony Mix and Reed Doughty could swing all over depth chart depending on who joins the roster. If the Redskins don’t add a ‘big’ receiver, suddenly Mix has a decent shot to get playing time. Does Doughty start or end up stapled on the bench? It all depends on what other players join the team.

So next time the front office is a parading a new player out a press conference and everyone is all smiles, keep in the mind there is some player somewhere cursing his bad luck.
