Redskins Mock Draft Summary 4.0

So we’re just over a week away from the NFL draft and things are starting to take shape.  The Dolphins have begun negotiating with various potential number 1 picks but it doesn’t appear that they’ve settled on anyone yet.  Without a clear-cut number 1 the entire 1st round is still in flux.

Next week, we’ll profile a bunch of players who the Redskins may look at with their 1st round choice.  There will be scouting reports, assessments from people who cover the college teams and videos.  But until then, here’s the latest from all the major mock drafts:

CBS Sportsline
Clark Judge

Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia

Redskins could use help along the offensive line, especially with a young QB. (Ed note - is it just me or does this comment make no sense considering he picked a CB)

Pete Prisco

Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State

They need to get help for Santana Moss. Thomas is soaring up a lot of team’s rankings.

Sports Illustrated

Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson

The pendulum seems to be swinging back toward Merling, whose recent surgery for a sport hernia made some teams think twice about him. The Redskins need a defensive end who can create some havoc, and his track record is solid on that front. If the Redskins go receiver, Hardy is likely the best remaining choice

Vic Carruci

Limus Sweed, WR, Texas

The Redskins need help in a variety of spots, but new coach Jim Zorn is pushing for someone to add spark to his offense.

Pat Kirwan

Calais Campbell, DE, Miami

Campbell’s college coach is now on the Redskin staff and he knows Campbell better than anyone.

Washington needs a big left defensive end opposite Andre Carter. Campbell has rare size and speed with solid college production.

Todd McShay (Insider)

Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson

Scenario 1: Washington is likely hoping that Thomas lasts this long because the Redskins need a No.1 who’s big enough to hold his ground against physical coverage and is fast enough to stretch the field.
Scenario 2: If the Redskins decide they can fill their need at receiver in the second round, Merling is an alternative.
Scenario 3: If the other two scenarios don’t pan out WR James Hardy has the size and speed Washington is looking for, though he’s not as fluid in his routes as Thomas.

Mel Kiper doesn’t have any comments on his picks, but he has the Redskins taking Merling in the 1st round and Chilo Rachal, G, USC in the 2nd round.
