Redskins Trade for DE Erasmus James

The Washington Redskins have traded a conditional 7th round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for Defensive End Erasmus James according to Jason La Confora.  The pick is conditional based on James making the 53 man roster to begin the season.  If James doesn’t make the team the Vikings get nothing.

James was chosen 18th overall in the 2005 draft by the Vikings, but his production hasn’t matched his draft position.  James has only five career sacks and has also been saddled with injury problems, playing only eight games combined in the last two seasons.  James was put on waivers by the Vikings last week, but pulled back when the Redskins offered up the draft pick in return.  The Redskins have a late waiver claim, so offering the pick was the only way to ensure they’d land James.

James was coached in college by Redskins defensive line coach John Palermo, so the hope is he can help pull some of the potential out of James.  James will have to pass a physical this week for the deal to be finalized, but it is very unlikely that the trade would be pulled.  He’s been doing light work over the off-season with the Vikings, but the Redskins are confident in his health according to JLC.
