Jason Taylor, Redskin
Reports are coming in that the trade that everyone thought might happen, everyone hoped wouldn’t need to happen, and the Miami Dolphins so desperately wanted to happen, has happened. With Philip Daniels going down, the Redskins have traded for Miami Dolphins DE Jason Taylor. Cerrato panicked, though. We overpaid, of course, giving up a 2nd Rounder in 2009 and a 6th in 2010 (when, barring a miracle, Taylor will have already retired). Let’s hope it’s worth what we’re giving up… however, a deep playoff run may still convince Taylor to hang on for one more season beyond that, to try to get that ring. Cerrato is swearing, “100 % certain” that Taylor will play more than one season. Of course, his price is steep… all of our free cap space is gone, and somethings got to give, somewhere, as well, for a small amount ($500K-ish). And of course, that still doesn’t give us any free cap space for emergencies in season….
Regardless, this should be a significant boost to the DL. While Daniels is a very good DE (he’s way underrated), Taylor is still an All-Pro, and is only a few years from his defensive player of the year status. I don’t think Romo or Manning are going to approve of this move.

Honestly, I like the deal. The 6th rounder means nothing and while a 2nd round pick is a hefty price to pay, the Redskins were in a desperate state. I was more concerned it was going to be a 1st round pick.
Taylor is still good. He had 11 sacks last year in his last three years and instantly becomes our best DE. A tandem of Taylor and Andre Carter is pretty darn good. Taylor may retire after this year but if he does he’s leaving 8.5 million dollars on the table. That’s a lot of incentive to come back. If he renegotiated and the Skins had given him $10 million guaranteed then I’d be more worried about retirement.

I can see Taylor sticking it out, really, especially if the Redskins are going to play the Dolphins next year (2009) either in the preseason or in the regular season; you have to think that he’s going to want to stick it to Parcells by playing well. Otherwise, he’d have to play four seasons to get the shot.
However, that said, we could have gotten Taylor for JUST the 2nd rounder as recently as…. Saturday. We probably could have gotten Taylor for a 3rd and the 6th, too. But losing two DEs on Day 1, the Dolphins knew we were desperate… so we paid the price that they demanded.
I guess in the end it will work out… but look what we picked up with our #2s this year. That’s a hefty price for a player who may only make one season (and may not make that…. Taylor could get hurt, too).
