Sticking in my Craw
I’m feeling a bit ornery this today, in that spirit I present a list of things that are ticking me off early this off-season:
-
The Jason Taylor trade doesn’t signify some great flaw in the Redskins front office plan. Not many teams could survive losing a starting defensive end without suffering a big drop-off. The Redskins front office saw a hole and moved quickly to fill it. Demetric Evans and Chris Wilson would have likely done as well as most back-up DE’s if forced to play full-time but adding one of the best players in the league is always a good move if the price is reasonable.

Eli Manning is NOT an elite quarterback. Its possible for an NFL team to win a Super Bowl without a top QB and the Giants did just that. It was their defense, in particular their defensive line that won the Super Bowl for them. E. Manning spent the entire last drive of that game trying to throw interceptions but the Patriots dropped two balls. David Tyree makes a ridiculous catch and all of the sudden Manning is great. He’s not. Jason Campbell had a better QB rating than Eli last year (77.6 vs 73.9). Jason Campbell had a better completion percentage than Eli last year (60.0 vs 56.1). Manning is a bottom tier starter and the Giants are not better than the Redskins.

This list of indispensable players is awful. I’ll give you Brady, P. Manning and Westbrook but Adrian Peterson? Don’t the Vikings have Chester Taylor? Terrell Owens? The Cowboys would be fine without him.

Nothing that sticks in my craw - but congrats to Matt formerly of The Internet is for Zorn for landing a gig as the official Redskins blogger. He’s got access to the team and facilities that us peons would give our left pinky fingers for. Now I just need Matt- official Redskins blog and Chris Cooley’s blog and the throw up a link to here on their blogroll to a brother. Don’t make me beg.

I love Ben and The Curly R but I can’t possible disagree with him more on this Bret Favre thing. All things being equal (i.e. no age, cap or salary concerns) I’d take Campbell over Favre this year. I’m not a Campbell fan boy by any stretch, but Favre is more likely to throw 25 interceptions this year than to repeat his great season from a year ago. Look at his last three seasons - one good one and two bad years - he’s no better than Campbell at this point.
- A few other Redskins blogs that I’m not sure I’ve mentioned here (I really need to update the Redskins Resources page): DC Redskins Examiner, AOL Redskins Fanhouse and Washington Times Redskins 360 blog. All are good reads and nice adds to your daily working avoiding routines. (Looks like I need to beg two more blogs to add me to their blogroll)
Alright, that’s enough for today. I feel better already.

Well obviously with the Jason Taylor deal, or maybe it is not obvious, if the Redskins are truly turning around their strategy for handling the draft is the context here, then the team obviously cannot give up for Brett similar compensation as they did for Jason Taylor so that deal is out.
Jason Campbell will do well enough this year, it was never about him, I am of the opinion that a steady hand like Brett’s would have eased the transition to a new offensive system that happens to be similar to the one Brett ran in Green Bay, and perhaps done a better job maximizing veteran output.
This team is getting older and waiting around for Jason Campbell and Jim Zorn to get on the same page is not a good option. If Jason Campbell struggles this season and the Redskins suffer for it we will be reading pieces by others than me wondering if that would have been the difference maker.

I assume you meant they’re quite boring, but that aside I usually do my writing at work and its been a busy week. So you are right… these last two days haven’t been my best.

No one seems to be a Jason Campbell “guy” or “fan” or “fill in the blank”. With good reason, the guy is about a boring a player as the last two posts.
Report this, how is Colt Brennan doing and if Todd Collings took over today, how many more touchdowns will he throw than Campbell in his entire career? Makes no sense to me. You have to work with what you’ve got. You have Campbell or you have he quarter back that put together an incredible run and got you to the playoffs.

Todd Collins is struggling big time. Its been one of the top stories in camp. He spent forever in Saunders offense and is having trouble adapting. I don’t think there is much doubt that Campbell has more upside than Collins in this or any offense not run by Saunders.
Brennan is a rookie and having the usual rookie ups and downs. You’ll probably see a whole lot of him in the 1st exhibition game.
