Redskins trailing the Colts 13-9 heading into the 3rd quarter. Colt Brennan is set to make his NFL debut shortly.
- Shaun Suisham boots one out of the endzone for a touchback. Quinn Gray still in there, Colts waste a timeout on the 1st play. Thus far out of the corners battling for the nickle/dime back (depending on Carlos Rogers health), Leigh Torrence looks the best. Rob Jackson gets another sack but nullified on a penalty, it was a completely busted play by the Colts though, didn’t take much skill. Mike Hart shredding the Redskins defense on this drive. The defense has looked like garbage for much of this game. Its only the 1st pre-season game but Greg Blache hasn’t exactly been my favorite guy (note link is from 2005).
- Colt Brennan sighting. Whoa… nice pass by Brennan to McMullen, just as I was about to feel bad for him for having an O-lineman in the game named Crummey. Brennan floated it in, just over the shoulder of McMullen, right on the money for a 34 yard gain. Brennan with another weird looking throw but right on the money for a touchdown to Maurice Mann. Very nice start for Brennan.
- Big man Jared Larenzen in at QB for the Colts… and he just rushed for nine yards… not the proudest moment for the defense. Chris Horton gets a sack on a nice safety blitz had some trouble getting down the QB who probably outweighs him by 80lbs but he got the job done. Redskins get a rare stop.
- Brennan completes a risky pass to Goode, could have been picked up but he got it through there somehow. Drive gets extended on a Colts penalty after Brennan was short on a quick slant. Just flashed a graphic, Redskins QBs have only thrown two incomplete passes thus far. Brennan to my fave player today Marcus Mason for another TD. Colt Brennan with a very strong debut. 23-16 Redskins.
- Jim Zorn looks very calm on the sideline, again its just the pre-season so who knows how he’ll act when the games matter but for now he looks in control. The offensive side of team looks very smooth for a 1st pre-season game.
- Nice special team tackle by Stuart Schweigert (NFL.com credits the tackle to Nemo Broughton, so perhaps I was wrong). We’re down to the bottom of the roster now, lots of guys playing who I don’t know anything about. Justin Tryon pops a wide receiver who drops the pass on 3rd down and forces a punt. Mann flubbs the punt return but recovers… for a guy battling for a practice squad spot that stuff can hurt.
- Derek Devine in at QB for the Redskins. Devine is a guy who knows the Zorn offense. So far he’s been handing off and watching Marcus Mason carving up the Colts defense. No idea where Derrick Frost is, but Brooks has done all the punting and holding today. Decent punt, angled towards the sideline, nothing on the return.
- FYI – only injuries thus far are Todd Wade and Stephan Heyer, neither looked super serious but they were banged up in this 2nd half.
- Chris Horton… 2 sacks and an onside kick recovery… looks to have good size for a safety as well. He’s played a lot this game and looked decent, no idea how he’s done in pass coverage however. Interception return touchdown by Matteral Richardson, an undrafted free agent, big moment for him.
- Pierre Garcon!!! with a big kick return but ducks out of bounds when confront with Shaun Suisham, sissy!
FINAL THOUGHTS: Pretty successful pre-season game for the Redskins. The defense wasn’t sharp, but the offense looked crisp. Jason Campbell and Colt Brennan both impressed, Marcus Mason picked up his strong play from last pre-season and finished with 98 yards. It didn’t look like their were any serious injuries which is the biggest thing in these games. All things considered, us Redskins fans have to be happy.
All the quarterbacks had good games statistically. Brennan just seemed to have some energy, enthusiasm, about him that Campbell and Collins did not show. I hope he has that game awareness – an ability to know what to do and be able to do it, during a game.
Jackson, the DE, had a decent game – for someone I had heard nothing about. I do not know how good the tackles are that he faced, however, or how well he played against their run.
Horton, db, always seemed to be around the ball. Like Brennan, seemed to have game sense.
It is hard to gauge our defense, as so many first stringers, especially the linemen, did not play.
The rookie player that impressed me the most was Rinehart, the guard. I do not think he got beat. Several times on running plays he pushed the tackle back towards the linebackers. He seemed to be back in that area as much as the running backs.
