Ah why not… not going to be that exciting but lets suffer together.
- The Colts go with an onside kick to start?? Seriously? Recovered by draft pick Chris Horton after Khary Campbell fiddles with it for a while. Nice dreads on Horton.
- Redskins blast down the field and score in three plays. Two passes and a long run by Rock Cartwright and we have a touchdown. Very un-Gibbs like offensive drive. Campbell’s 1st pass was good, the 2nd was a bit underthrown but Randle-El was wide open for a TD. On the Rock run, the Colts were short a man on defense… ah pre-season.
- Favre back to Green Bay… 2nd update already in this game.
- Redskins kick-off and cover well, bunch of guys in on the tackle. Springs with a nice tackle in run support on 1st down, but the Colts get a 1st down on a few passes. Campbell is starting at OLB with Fletcher out and HB Blades hurt. Not many starters on defense - Springs, Smoot, Washington and Doughty are about it. Rob Jackson - 7th round pick, goes around a TE like nothing and gets a sack, but the Colts are driving. Picking on the linebackers… Matt Sinclair in particular. Doughty had about 15 tackles on that drive but a huge whiff on Dallas Clark to lead to a 1st down. Skins stiffen up and hold the Colts to a FG.
- Starters still in for the Redskins, probably the last drive for them. Campbell still looking good, Jansen gets burned for a sack by some guy I’ve never heard of, I’ll let it slide due to rust although Jansen does worry me. Redskins forced to punt, Durant Brooks punt goes long—- touchback. Assuming Campbell is done, there is nothing to complain about - he was accurate, found the open man and generally looked very sharp.
- Scrubs in… although I do see Khary Campbell out there still. Quinn Gary in for the Colts, he played some games for Jacksonville last year. Redskins hold on a 4th down, no real standouts on that drive although Leigh Torrence had a nice tackle on a 3rd down to hold the Colts short of the 1st down and force the 4th down.
- Backups have landed including Todd Collins. Todd YODER with two straight catches, Rock Cartwright going for 30 carries. Collins holds on the ball way too long and gets smoked forcing the team to punt. Brooks redeems himself and has a ball downed on the 7 yard line (guess the punting rotation is out), that punt was 54 yards too and it just stopped dead…. impressive.
- That punt pays off as the Colts back-up center snaps over Gray’s head and it goes out the back of the endzone for a safety. No one on the defense did anything to force it, just a pitiful snap.
- Rock gets a rest, Byron Westbrook returns the free kick and Marcus Mason is at running back. Collins really looks tentative in there and is holding the ball way too long. All of this leads to a sack and the another Durant Brooks punt which seemed to have decent hang time (although no clock on the broadcast). Long TD return nullified by a holding penalty. Brooks looks decent thus far.
- PIERRE GARCON!!! Now that’s a quality name (WR for the Colts). Boom, very quick TD for the Colts. Seemed to be Schweigert’s guy who caught the TD although Gray had a ton of time back there. No one on the defense has stood out.
- Have to say Marcus Mason looks good again, he’s just a quick guy and brings a different element than we’re used to. Kind of reminiscent of Ahmed Bradshaw who really broke through for the Giants last year. Fred Davis makes his 1st catch, he’s big and gained a few extra yards. Collins again looks lost out there… just holding on to the ball too long. My Canadian buddy continues to frustrate me and missed a FG.
- Yappy Justin Tryon gets burned for a long pass and was called for pass interference but again Gray ran around and bought himself a bunch of time back there, 2nd string defense has not gotten any pass rush, not a big surprise with Chris Wilson out (Demetric Evans started and isn’t playing with the 2nd stringers either)
HALFTIME THOUGHTS: Jason Campbell looked good which is really the most important aspect of this season. Other guys who impressed in limited action - Durant Brooks with a great 54 yard punt (although he did have a touchback), Marcus Mason (flashback to last pre-season), and Rob Jackson. Guys who struggled - Matt Sinclair, Khary Campbell, and the entire pass rush.
I’ll continue on part two.
