Malcom Kelly To Get Scoped

Malcolm Kelly, one of the Redskins three 2nd round picks, has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee which will keep him out of training camp for at least two weeks.  Kelly had been missing time due to a hamstring issue, but complained of knee stiffness while working his way back.  He ended up seeing James Andrews and needing the scope.  This injury combined with Devin Thomas’ on-going hamstring woes (he’s expected to miss another week) gives guys like Anthony Mix (assuming he can get back on the field) and Billy McMullen a chance to impress the coaches in their efforts to make the team.

Schweigert Gets the Snip

So much for that camp battle.  Stuart Schweigert, who was expected to compete with Reed Doughty for a starting safety role was cut after the 1st pre-season game.  Schweigert was caught out of position on a Colts TD and was likely done in by the strong play of rookie Chris Horton.  Doughty is all but assured of being the opening week starter at this point.  The Redskins signed S Patrick Ghee to take over the roster spot.  Hogs Haven favorite Pete Schmitt was also re-signed after being cut early in training camp.

Heyer, Wade Injuries Not Serious

When both Stephan Heyer and Todd Wade went down on Sunday, it could have been a big blow to the Redskins depth at offensive tackle.  Luckily neither injury is very serious.  Heyer suffered a sprained knee and Wade has a sprained ankle.  Both will likely miss some time this week and if they can’t go for the next pre-season game expect rookie Chris Rinehart to see extensive action at tackle.  UPDATE: Both are out two weeks.
