2008 Redskins Training Camp Battles: Week Two

One game into the pre-season and some of these battles have already ended.  If there’s a lesson to be learned in all of this, if the media is dealing with a camp that isn’t very newsworthy they’ll exaggerate some of these battles.  Hey, stories have to be printed right?

Starting Strong Safety: Reed Doughty vs. Stuart Schweigert

First Round KO.  Doughty’s got the job, Schweigert’s looking for work.

Odds of Winning: Doughty 100%

Starting Defensive Tackle: Kedric Golston vs. Anthony Montgomery

Greg Blache continues to insist this is a wide-open battle and Montgomery’s broken hand has open the door for Golston to make an impression.  Montgomery will not play again this week which can’t do anything but help Golston’s chances.  Golston didn’t stand-out against the Colts, so he wasn’t able to make substantial gains but being on the field is a big plus.

Odds of Winning: Montgomery 70% Golston 30%

3rd Wide Receiver: Devin Thomas vs. Malcolm Kelly vs. James Thrash vs. Anthony Mix

Zorn has named Thrash his 3rd WR for now and blasted the rookies for reporting to camp in bad physical condition.  Mix is back but he’s not winning this job.  Kelly had his knee scoped this week and will likely return after Thomas now which greatly reduces his chances.

Odds of Winning: Thrash 75% Thomas 15% Kelly 10% Mix 0%

Punter: Derrick Frost vs. Durant Brooks

We heard reports before the Indy game that Frost and Brooks were going to rotate kicks but Frost didn’t see the field in Canton.  Brooks handled all the punting and holding duties.  He had one great kick that dropped within the 10 yard line but did have a touchback on another punt.  The missed FG hasn’t been blamed on a bad hold, but I doubt we’d hear anything about that even if it was.  Brooks is favorite in this competition and he didn’t appear to hurt his chances on Sunday.  Frost is expected to get his turn against Buffalo

Odds of Winning: Brooks 65% Frost 35%
