Live Blog: Redskins at Jets (2nd Half)

1st half blog here.

3rd Quarter

  • Devin Thomas with a nice return to start the 2nd half and Marcus Mason comes in and does his thing… sparking the team with some nice runs.  Redskins again back in the redzone.  But Collins is being super conservative… Suisham with another field goal (38 yards).  Jets 7 Redskins 6
  • These Jets announcers are quickly getting annoying.  The constant Pennington bashing is a bit over the top.  The Jets had more troubles than just him last year.
  • Big return by the Jets on the ensuing kickoff gives them nice field position.  Jesse Chatman with some nice runs but the Redskins hold the Jets to a FG attempt which is missed.
  • Derek Devine is now in…. and I’m fading.  Devine is very, very raw.  And the Redskins punt…  another gimpy ones.  These are landing within the 20.. but when you’re only getting 28 yards… you have to aim within the 10.  I notice from Derrick Frost’s stats last week he was doing the same thing… maybe its by design… not sure.
  • Few notes since I’ve been away and not following the news… Anthony Mix isn’t playing.  Ladell Betts is going to be fine.. mild knee strain.  Also the guy with the hair is Fred Matua.
  • Brett Ratliff now in for the Jets… announcers obviously like him better than Clemens….

4th Quarter

  • But the Jets are forced to punt…. Maurice Mann with a fair catch.
  • Colt Brennan is in…. Mason still at RB.  Drive goes nowhere.. 3 and out…  Brooks with a boomer.. 59 yards to get the team out of trouble with field position.
  • Somewhere along the way I missed an injury to Randy Thomas… its a knee strain and he should be ok.
  • We’re down to the guys who are going to be cut soon….  and the Jets nail the field goal this time… so now its really Jets 10 Redskins 6
  • This is the type of situation Jim Zorn wanted to see Brennan in, so this will be good to see. Holding penalty on Matua takes away a nice Mason run… and Redskins punt again… 55 yards with not much of a return.
  • Redskins manage to hold the Jets and get the ball back with just over two mins left.  Brennan quickly gets them up to midfield with a nice pass to Billy McMullen.   Mason breaks a big run on a draw and the Redskins are within the 30 with 1:41 left.  After a sack where the o-line completely screws up coverage… Brennan to Goode and the Redskins score a TD.  It was a dangerous pass but Goode blocked off the defender and had clear sailing for a 33 yard TD.  Redskins 13 Jets 10
  • Missed tackles by some Redskins leads to a big gain by a Jets tight end and New York is in scoring range.  Oh…. and Nugent shanks a gimme….  Redskins win.

  • I watched the Comcast presentation of the game live Saturday night; Sunday night, they had an Encore rebroadcast. I only saw the last five minutes of the game (Colt Brennan’s furious finish, and the Jets fatal drive for a would-be tieing FG), but one thing I >DIDN’T< see during the broadcast Saturday, I saw on Sunday…. the final Jets pass to the wide open WR that was dropped in the End Zone wasn’t clean; someone got a mitt on the ball and deflected it (slightly, but enough that the deflection is almost certainly the cause of the drop).

I didn’t hear Joey T. make mention of it, but in a drive where I’m ticking off the numbers of the young players who had just played themselves into Bag Boy status in a week, it’s interesting to see someone got their hand on the ball… I wonder if that heads-up play (I couldn’t get the number, and the broadcast didn’t reshow it) might just have saved a Special Teams spot for some lucky UDFA.

Or not….. after all, there are only 53 spots to go around, and with a draft class of 10, it’s already stretching the roster to get everyone onto the team. You can’t put a Chris Horton on the Practice Squad, for example, and barring injury, at least 9 of 10 (and to be brutally honest, probably all 10; sorry, Frosty!) will be on the roster to travel to the Meadowlands in a few weeks. So how many UDFAs make the team? Not many.
