Full List of Cuts
Here’s the full list of cuts from the Washington Redskins today with my thoughts:
- Nemo Broughton, FB: At least he lasted longer than Pete Schmitt
- Derrick Frost, P: If you are one of the worst punters in the league, you’re going to have to whip the competition to win a camp battle, Frost didn’t. It was close and tie goes the guy who might not suck.
- Anthony Mix, WR: He was a man-crush of mine but you can’t show up to camp overweight and spend half of training camp injured and expect to win a job if you’re unproven. Practice squad possibility.
- Marcus Mason, RB: I know everyone thinks he’s going to get picked up by someone but the fact is every team has guys like Mason who end up getting cut. He can be an effective NFL running back but his chances in Washington were dependent on his special team skills and he just didn’t stand out in that regard. Practice squad possibility.
- Maurice Mann, WR: Here’s a guy who proved something this pre-season. If he can work on his punt return abilities he may have a future here. Practice squad possiblity.
- Billy McMullen, WR: I said this after the Jacksonville game but people were making too much of his catch totals in the pre-season. 5th or 6th wide-outs aren’t there to catch the ball, they are there to make special teams plays and McMullen got beat out by others when it came down to special teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back when Santana Moss has his annual groin injury.
- Ryan Boschetti, DL: Boschetti managed to carve out a decent length career through working his tail off and lasted much longer than a lot of more skilled players. I could see him coming back if injuries pile up, but this may be the end of line for Boschetti.
- Derek Devine, QB: He was toast the second Colt Brennan showed an ounce of potential.
- Todd Wade, T: He was injured and can only play one position, Jansen’s return and Heyer’s emergence sealed his fate. Will likely find a home somewhere else in the NFL due to experience.
- Bryon Westbrook, CB: Probably the end of the line for Westbrook here, wonder if the Eagles will give him a shot?
- Curtis Gatewood, LB: He showed a bit of potential against Jacksonville and as a guy converted from defensive end where he played in college, he needs a bit more seasoning. Practice squad possibility
- Matteral Richardson, CB: Another guy who showed potential. Practice squad possiblity.
And the rest without comment:
- Matthias Askew, DT
- Devin Clark, T
- Andrew Crummey, OG
- Horace Gant, WR
- Patrick Ghee, S
- David Holloway, LB
- Cedrick Holt, CB
- Fred Matua, OG
- Danny Verdun-Wheeler, LB
- Tavares Washington, OT
As for the practice squad, this will likely be completely wrong, but I’ll predict you see: Mann, Gatewood, Richardson and Mason (assuming none of them are picked up by other teams). The other spot usually seems to go a player who was in camp with another team.

The Practice Squad can have eight members now, not just five.

Hope some people get on here this year and leave some comments. I enjoyed this blog.
As far as cuts, I’m not sure who was watching what. Tyron got beat like little school girl at corner and you get rid of Richardson? Wade I get; Frost? How do you get rid of a vet punter when they both did a good job preseason? Finally, my biggest peeve, Billy McMullen, my god that guy was all over the place making catches I haven’t seen Moss or Randle El make in three years! 6′ 4″ jumps, runs, catches, and makes plays.. comes back to the ball well … and not take over the rookies who spent more time in rehab than anything!

Thanks Riggo.. I’m not sure why more people don’t comment. We get about 400 visits a day… perhaps I’ll come up with an incentive to comment.
